Located along the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, Amber Cove serves as a vibrant gateway to the region of Puerto Plata. Designed as a cruise port with a strong sense of place, the area reflects the island’s long connection to the sea and trade. The name itself comes from the rich deposits of amber found in the surrounding hills, a fossilized resin that sometimes contains ancient plant fragments or even small insects. Visitors often begin their experience with views of the harbor framed by green mountains, setting the tone for what lies beyond.

Within Amber Cove, the layout invites exploration at a relaxed pace. Colorful buildings house artisan shops, cafés, and small museums that introduce local crafts and traditions. One highlight is the chance to see amber jewelry crafted from stones mined nearby, each piece carrying natural patterns shaped over countless years. Cultural displays often feature Dominican music and dance, offering a lively introduction to rhythms such as merengue and bachata, which remain central to everyday life across the country.

Beyond the port, the surrounding region opens up into a landscape filled with waterfalls, forests, and coastal viewpoints. Many visitors venture to the famous Damajagua Waterfalls, where a series of cascades allows for guided climbs, natural slides, and clear pools for swimming. Others take a scenic ride to Mount Isabel de Torres, where a hilltop viewpoint reveals sweeping views of the coastline. The area also offers horseback rides through rural paths and visits to local farms, where cacao and coffee are grown.
